Be sure it is an STI before Treating

If you have those signs and symptoms that suggest you have a sexually transmitted infection (STI), it is often important to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis. A laboratory test can detect the infection, co-infections you might have, and possibly the cause.

Here are some of the tests that can be carried out;

  • Blood tests—This is the easiest method of confirming the presence of an infection. Especially HIV or later stages of syphilis.
  • Fluid samples—Some STIs can be confirmed with the fluid samples from a genital sore
  • Screening—You can use this method even if you have no symptoms of a disease. Though it is not part of a routine health checkup.
  • Urine sample—You can prefer to use a urine sample for the test.
  • Saliva test—Just like urine, some prefer their STI to be confirmed with a saliva sample

Those who are at high risk are;

Very sexually active persons—People that often have unprotected sex from different partners. If you are in this group, you should test for STI every six months

People with hepatitis c— Hepatitis C and B are not sexually transmitted diseases. But it increases the risk of contracting one. People with hepatitis C/B should have regular STI tests- At least once per year.

Women above 21 years of age—Experts suggest that women age 21 and above take the pap test once every three years. The Pap test screens for cervical abnormalities, precancerous changes that are often caused by human papillomavirus (HPV)and even fibroid.

Gays—Homosexual men are at a higher risk of contracting STI when compared with other groups. Many health groups suggest that men in this group should take regular tests for STDs. They recommend annual or more frequent tests for this group.
